Four players with Hawaii ties in Micah Christenson (Kamehameha), Taylor Averill (University of Hawaii) and Punahou's Erik Shoji and Micah Ma'a helped the United States men's volleyball team to a bronze medal, getting on the podium for the first time since 2016. The United States lost in five sets to eventual runner-up Poland, although it recovered with a sweep over Italy in the bronze medal match.
On the coaching side, former University of Hawaii men's libero Alfee Reft was an assistant on the women's volleyball team that finished with silver.
In surfing, Kauai's Tatiana Weston-Webb took home silver in women's surfing representing Hawaii, while Brisa Hennessy finished in fourth while surfing for Costa Rica. Modern surfing legends John John Florence and Carissa Moore were eliminated in Teahupo'o prior to the medal rounds.
In women's formula kite sailing, University of Hawaii alumna Daniela Moroz finished fourth overall.
There was also a heavy Hawaii presence across multiple Olympic basketball competitions.
Former University of Hawaii women's basketball star Amy Atwell took home bronze with Australia.
Meanwhile, former University of Hawaii forward Zigmars Raimo and Latvia finished in fourth at the men's 3x3 competition. Latvia began the tournament an unblemished 7-0 but lost both the semifinals and third place game.
In men's basketball 5x5 competition, 'Iolani's Hugh Watanabe and the University of Hawaii's Akira Jacobs both competed for team Japan, which went 0-3 in group play but almost pulled off a stunning upset of host and runner-up France, losing 94-90 in overtime.
Additionally, former Chaminade forward Kuany Kuany made the final 12-man roster for South Sudan, which went 1-2, good for ninth overall in its first Olympic tournament.
