Kakaako resident Gerard Kaleohana gets his flu shot every year and he said he hasn't been sick in a long time.

"Everybody should get it," Kaleohana said. "Stay protected, inoculated."

According to the state health department, the updated influenza vaccine protects against three different flu strains. Since it recently came out, they said it should be widely available.

Scott Sutton, regional director for CVS/Longs Drugs, said the flu shot is in high demand.

"It's really recommended to get a flu vaccine every year," he explained. "The body diminishes that vaccine over time so it's really helpful to immunize against all variants of flu, including COVID. That is always top of mind for all of us and keep our friends, family, keiki and loved ones safe."

Sutton said it's best not to wait.

"It's up to two weeks to take full effects so it's advised to get your flu vaccine early fall till the end of October," he explained.

CDC recommends everyone six months of age and older receive an updated 2024-2025 influenza vaccine. Flu vaccination has important benefits. It can reduce flu illnesses, visits to doctor's offices, and missed work and school due to flu, as well as make symptoms less severe and reduce flu-related hospitalizations and deaths.

According to Sutten, the new COVID vaccine is also available.

"We received the COVID vaccine, most locations, just a few days ago so it's brand new, FDA approved," he said. "I would also just recommend that you're able to get your flu vaccine and COVID vaccine at the same time."

Both COVID and flu vaccines can be taken at no cost, the pharmacy will go through the patient's insurance.
