HONOLULU (KHON2) -- Students with more time on their hands are spending summer break saving up or building their resumes.
"I'm working because I need money for college and I'm not doing anything for summer, so why not make money?" said Janel D. An employee at Junbi.
Retail Merchants of Hawaii President, Tina Yamaki, said summer is the second busiest time of the year, but the added labor force makes it easier to find hires compared to other times of the year.
"Until probably the last week of May, I couldn't find anyone to work and then school let out and we had a ton of new applicants," said Lily Caporael, Junbi Assistant Manager.
Other businesses like Island Vintage Coffee said it receives many applicants from students who've returned home for the summer.
"We feel like every single day is a weekend during the summer," stated Quy Yhua, Island Vintage Coffee Food & Beverage trainer. "I think it's the only time that they actually have free time to work a full-time job."
Many businesses are welcoming student hires ages 16 and older.
"Usually high school, college. I have some older students in their mid-twenties. It's a great time to get some experience outside of school," said Caporael.
