HONOLULU (KHON2) -- Enrollment throughout the 10 campuses of the University of Hawaii is up 3% for the fall 2024 semester in comparison to fall 2023.
New data revealed more than 50,000 students are currently enrolled in the UH system, which has not been done since 2018.
Reports added that enrollment is up at all seven community colleges, which has not happened since 2010.
University of Hawaii President David Lassner believes the data brings good news for the entire state after data showed "first-time freshman at UH from Hawaii high schools increased by 10% across the system" which includes a 15% increase at the Manoa campus and 9% increase at the community colleges.
"The more people who go to college means a more skilled workforce, and that translates to higher wages, and fewer residents receiving government assistance. The ripple effect cannot be understated," Lassner added.
Leeward Community College saw the biggest increase among UH's eight community colleges, enrolling more than 6,000 students in fall 2024 compared to last year.
Additionally, UH Community Colleges saw a 6% increase in Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander enrollment.
“We are so excited to see increases across our seven community colleges in overall enrollment and in these key areas. I commend our chancellors, their leadership and enrollment management teams for their great work along with our faculty and staff," said Della Teraoka, Interim VP for Community Colleges.
UH West Oahu was the only campus that saw a decrease in enrollment with 2,800 student attending this semester, which is down 2% from last year.
