LIHUE, Hawaii (KHON2) -- Renovations to one of Kauai's landfill sites continue to cause trash pickup delays for residents. Kauai County said delays should be expected through early 2025.
Since Kapaa Refuse Transfer Station renovations are still in progress and Lihue RTS is under construction, trucks must haul all residential trash to Kekeha Landfill instead.
According to Kauai County officials, the delays are caused by the long drives and offloading procedures to the landfill.
Although refuse pick-up could be delayed or occur at different times than usual, residential refuse collections will take place on the regularly scheduled days. Customers are advised to leave their trash out. We thank the public for their understanding and cooperation.

Residents are advised to leave their trash out the night before or by 4:30 a.m. Those who do not set their trash out in time will be asked to bring it to the nearest refuse transfer station for disposal.
Customers should also make sure all trash is inside the cart and fully close the lid before pickup.
The carts must be placed at least five feet away from any object and placed three feet apart from other carts.
Once the trash is collected, the carts should be removed from the curb as soon as possible.
