HONOLULU (KHON2) -- Tamura's Market in Hauula will not be closing after all.
A last-minute agreement between the store’s owner and the landowner will allow the market to remain open for at least five more years, with the option to extend the lease for an additional five years.
The market had been slated to close at the end of the year when its lease expired and rent increases were set to take effect.
News of the closure had devastated local residents and customers, many of whom expressed concerns about losing their only nearby grocery store.
In a statement, Tamura's President and CEO expressed gratitude for the overwhelming community support, noting how much the market means to local residents.
“It’s clear that Tamura’s is more than just a store – it’s a vital part of this community,” the statement read.
